A šššš¦ hippo calf is being tossed around in the water by a crocodile as it swims around with macabre joy.
The giant predatorĀ reared out of the water to reveal the tiny carcass after apparently snatching its prey while its motherās back was turned.
Amateur photographer Roland Ross captured these incredible photographs near Lower Sabie in Kruger Park,Ā South Africa.
Mr Ross was watchingĀ the huge crocodile swimmingĀ in a small dam when he was shocked by the brutal scene.
Mr Ross said: āI could see theĀ crocĀ had something in its mouth as it began to come our way.
āThe crocodile then began to perform all sorts of antics with theĀ šššš¦ hippo.
āIt was throwing it in the air,Ā spinningĀ and jumping and splashing.ā
Mr Ross, who was onĀ holidayĀ with his wife when the events unfolded, was stunned by the size of the animal as average crocodiles in the area grow to around four meters.
Ross said: āWe didnāt see anyĀ šš¾ššĀ take place.
The hippo could have beenĀ deadĀ for any number of reasons, sometimes male hippos will occasionally šš¾šš babies too.
āWe have seen croc šš¾ššs before, but we haveĀ neverĀ seenĀ a croc playing with its prey.
āOne could compare it toĀ an Orca WhaleĀ playing with a seal. It looked to me as almost identical behaviour.ā
Mr Ross watched the crocodileās performance for aroundĀ 25 minutesĀ before it took its food into deeper water and disappeared from sight.
