27 Years of Silence, and 7 Words That Brought Bobby Dalbec to His Knees

By [Author Name] — Boston, MA | July 24, 2025

Bobby Dalbec hit his first home run in nearly a month Friday night at a packed Fenway Park. But it wasn’t the sound of the crack off his bat, or the eruption of the crowd, that brought him to tears on the field.

That swing was only the ending. The real story began the morning before — at Logan Airport — when Bobby flew home for his 27th birthday and received a gift from the only person who ever taught him to believe in himself… without ever saying a single word.

A tiny USB, wrapped in a plain brown gift box. Inside — an 18-second video. Just enough time to change a season. Maybe even a life.

“My son… Boston is proud of you.”

The voice was shaky. The pronunciation rough. But for Bobby Dalbec, it was the sound he’d waited his entire life to hear.

27 Years of Quiet Love

Dalbec was raised in Seattle by his mother — Janine Dalbec, a deaf and mute nurse who raised him alone from the time he was a baby. No father in the picture. No close relatives nearby. Just the two of them, sign language, and sticky notes posted around the house:
“Eat your breakfast, sweetheart,”
“I love you,”
“Believe in yourself.”

Those who knew Bobby as a teenager in Colorado described him as a “silent fighter.” He never complained. Never pointed fingers. Partly because he was raised by a woman who never complained either — even though the world had never heard her voice.

“My mom never needed to speak for me to know how much she loved me,” Bobby said in a 2022 interview. “But that didn’t mean I never dreamed of hearing her voice. Just once.”

A Heavy Summer

The 2025 season hadn’t started with much promise for Bobby. No longer a rising prospect, he’d become a utility name — used off the bench when others got hurt, given a few starts, then quietly rotated out again.

The numbers didn’t lie: 19 consecutive games without a home run. Batting average hovering at .204. Online chatter grew louder: “Why is Dalbec still on the roster?”

He heard it all. But he also read the same texts every morning from his mother:

  • “Keep going, my boy.”

  • “Fenway shines when you’re on that field.”

  • “Just wait for your birthday gift this year!”

The Video…

No one knows how long Janine Dalbec had been practicing. Bobby suspects at least six months.

The video was filmed in their living room. Sunlight filtering through the curtains. An old Red Sox flag hanging behind her. She looked straight into the camera. Took a deep breath.

“My… son… Boston… is… proud… of… you.”

The voice — hoarse, broken into syllables — felt more real than anything Bobby had ever heard. He said he “froze completely” in the arrivals terminal at Logan. Speechless. Then the tears came.

It wasn’t grief — it was joy. Deeper than any win he’d ever felt.

A stranger recognized him. Not because of the Red Sox hoodie he was wearing, but because of “the look in his eyes — like he had just watched his whole life change.”

The Home Run That Meant More

The next day, the Red Sox faced the Tigers. Dalbec was a surprise starter, only because another player was scratched last-minute. There were no expectations.

Seventh inning. Game tied. Two outs. Dalbec stepped up to the plate.

First pitch — foul. Second pitch — ball. Third pitch — a 94-mph fastball, drifting inside.

Crack.

The ball sailed over the Green Monster.

Dalbec didn’t celebrate. He looked up at the stands, then placed his hand over his heart.

His teammates mobbed him at home plate. But his eyes were red.

Not from the home run.

But from knowing that his mother was watching — and for the first time in 27 years, she could say the words:

“My son… Boston is proud of you.”

And Now…

Bobby Dalbec doesn’t know if that home run will be enough to secure his place on the Red Sox for the long haul. But one thing is certain: he’s no longer the same.

“It wasn’t that I hit a home run,” Dalbec said after the game. “It was that — after 27 years — my mom found her voice. And she used it… to lift me.”

That night, Fenway didn’t just light up because of a victory.
It lit up because of a small, broken voice that had been silent for too long — and finally rose high enough to shake an entire city.
