A man accused of allegedly running over the mother of his child with a pick-up truck as their young daughter watched on in horror has been held without bond.
Edwin Amaya, 32, is facing a premeditated murder charge after he left 29-year-old Brenda Hernandez Amaya dead, according to Broward Sheriff’s Office officials.
The pair were arguing over their shared child in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 100 block of S.W. Eighth Street in Pompano Beach, Florida, on Saturday evening when the tragedy happened, authorities said. The suspect, who shared a two-year-old son with the victim, got into his Ford F-250 and drove it into the woman, running her over

He also allegedly injured Brenda and the father of two of her children, 32-year-old Omar Munguia-Henrique, who tried to hang onto the vehicle as Amaya drove away and later fell to the ground, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office. Deputies said that while fleeing the scene, Amaya crashed into some parked cars before running away on foot. He was arrested nearby.
The suspect, who faced the judge on Monday, did not speak. His plea for a bond was denied. The victim’s 10-year-old daughter, whose dad Omar was injured, was shocked as she watched the incident unfold. The child spoke to CBS News Miami with her father’s permission and said: “I still can’t believe that’s true. I can’t believe it.”

She added: “He came… he was discussing my mom, then he went to the truck.” Munguia-Henrique told CBS News Miami he was part of a group going out for dinner that evening when Amaya allegedly showed up drunk and demanded to take the former couple’s toddler with him. This led to an argument between the pair and Brenda allegedly told Amaya that he could not get the boy.
Munguia-Henrique, Brenda’s ex-husband, alleged that Amaya then threatened to get his gun from the truck and “shoot all of you” and added that he tried to stop the suspect from getting into his truck but said he fought back, scratching and kicking him. Once in the vehicle, he “sped backward” and said he was leaving, the victim’s daughter said, adding that they believed him but at that point “he put speed and he hit my mom.”
Brenda’s family is now trying to raise money to send her body back to her home country of Honduras, where she will be buried. She lives behind three children, all aged 10 and younger.
Munguia-Henrique said: “We want him to pay for what he did. My children no longer have a mother because of him.” A GoFundMe page created by Brenda’s family has so far raised nearly $900 out of a $25,000 goal.
