Great Debate: is there an innate difference in temperament between male and female dogs?

March 18, 2024 by Pham Hien

“I adopted a female, they’re easier to handle than male dogs…”

“I want a lively male, they’re more fun to have.”

“I love my dog, but he’s so boisterous! Next time, I’m getting a bitch.”

How many times have we heard something similar from dog owners? And is there any truth at all in it, or is it just a myth?

There are many people who tend to prefer female dogs to their male counterparts. They believe them to be naturally more docile and submissive, easier to handle and unlikely to start a fight with other dogs. Others prefer males, – believing they are more driven.

However, many argue that it’s all down to the individuals’ personalities and that we, as humans, are simply making assumptions by pushing our own gender expectations and stereotypes on animals.

Is there an innate difference in temperament between male and female dogs?
