Kyle Hendricks: The Cubs Ace Who Quietly Became a Hero in the Classroom.Yen

June 28, 2025 by mrs a

Known as “The Professor” for his cerebral approach on the mound, Kyle Hendricks has long been respected for his calm demeanor and pinpoint control. But off the field, he’s been quietly making an even bigger impact — in the lives of teachers and students across Chicago.

In 2021, Hendricks and his wife Emma partnered with “AdoptAClassroom.org”, pledging tens of thousands of dollars to fund supplies and technology for underfunded public school classrooms in Chicago.

But he didn’t stop at donating. Hendricks visited schools personally, sitting in classrooms, talking with teachers, and hearing first-hand what students truly needed.

“Education changed my life,” Hendricks said.
“It gave me structure, discipline, and opened the door to everything. I want to make sure kids here have that same chance.”

With COVID-19 pushing teachers to their limits, Hendricks stepped up with funding for classroom tech, virtual learning software, books, and basic school supplies. One South Side teacher, Ms. Johnson, told reporters:

“Most people don’t know how often we reach into our own pockets. What Kyle did—without press, without fanfare—meant the world.”

He also helped pay for mental health resources for students returning to school post-pandemic, understanding that academic recovery must include emotional healing.

Though he’s never been one to seek the spotlight, Hendricks has consistently been involved with:

He was nominated multiple times for the Roberto Clemente Award, which honors MLB players for their character and community work.

What makes Hendricks’ story so impactful is how he leads without needing attention. In an age where athletes often announce every charitable act, Kyle has let his actions speak louder than any headline.

“You don’t have to be loud to lead,” he once told a young Little Leaguer.
“Just be consistent, care about people, and do what you say you will.”
